One of the definitions for the word “Acceptance” in the Merriam Webster Dictionary is “to recognize [something] as true.” As odd as it may seem this simple little word can make all the difference for people who are dealing with creditors and debt collection issues.

When you are part of a consumer culture it can be easy for your self-esteem and sense of worth to be tied to your wallet. I’ve talked about this before and we saw it first hand in the case of the Big-Spenders.

But no matter how difficult it may be to confront and come to grips with your financial reality, if you ever hope to recover from debt, you must start with Acceptance.

Recognizing the truth of your financial situation is often the first step in recovering from financial disaster.

After a certain point, one must Accept that the debt collectors are not going away.

You have to Accept the fact that in order to get out of debt, you may have to change your way of thinking and your patterns of behavior.

Sometimes, one must Accept that some of your own choices may have contributed to your financial situation.

But Acceptance is a choice. It is not an easy choice – but it is typically far better than the alternative.

If you choose to ignore your debt, that is if you do not Accept your financial reality, the debt doesn’t go away.

It gets bigger.

If you choose to turn a blind eye to the mounting creditor phone calls and debt collection letters, they won’t disappear.

The calls will keep coming and the letters will keep piling up in your in-box.

If you choose to keep your head in the sand, you may wake up one day and find yourself facing debt collection lawsuits, frozen bank accounts and garnished paychecks.

Do yourself a favor. Take a good hard look at your financial situation.  If there are things there that you don’t like – don’t run away from them.  Empower yourself and your financial future by confronting your debt demons.  Once you begin to Accept the fact that there are skeletons in your financial closet, you can start to clean out that closet and make strides towards financial freedom.

So today’s blog post is brought to you by the letter A for Acceptance – because that is the first step to turning your financial ship around. Once you Accept reality that you have today – you can get busy planing for the reality that you want in the future.
